Scouts Oct 17 Hammock Camp
30th October 2017
Enjoyable camp, Scouts were great!
The Scouts enjoyed an overnight event to try out the new hammocks and make the most of the generous offer from the St Clere Estate to use their land for our activities.
Having walked to the site from the HQ, the Scouts set up individual hammocks and tarps - their beds for the night - before spending time gaining knowledge and experience in some fundamental camp and Scouting skills. In particular, we focused on fire lighting, knife, axe and saw work.
It was a fairly relaxed affair, with no strict deadlines to meet (except getting back, whoops!) so we were able to, generally, take things at our own pace and adapt the programme according to what they wanted to do. The Scouts pitched their hammocks together and we did the cooking communally - as the Troop continues to grow, it is likely that they will spend more time as Patrols and do much more in their distinct units, such as the sleeping and cooking.
We all enjoyed a decent feed over the weekend, including (Sat, lunch) chicken 'kebabs' with peppers and onions and salad; (tea) chocolate orange cakes cooked in the fire [for Jack's birthday, thanks Kristie]; (dinner) chilli and nachos with corn on the cob (Sun, breakfast) Croissants; (second breakfast 😊) bacon and egg rolls; (lunch) savoury pancakes.
All the leaders were extremely pleased with how well the Scouts behaved and conducted themselves while on camp. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the time away with them and we can't wait to do so again.
